Hiring Practices & Policies


All OPT employees who work directly with patients require one of the following certifications:

  • A-EMCA (PCP) – Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant (Primary Care Paramedic)
  • EMT – Emergency Medical Technician
  • EFR – Emergency First Responder
  • EMR – Emergency Medical Responder
  • MFR – Medical First Responder

Hiring requirements at OPT also include a police criminal record check, a driver’s abstract record check, proof of immunization, CPR-C and Standard First Aid certificates, and various proofs of identity and citizenship.

Our employee training programs and ongoing requirements are equally rigorous. New employees must pass our in-house training program before the hiring process can continue.

It is the responsibility of each Employee to maintain his or her qualifications through regular training sessions, updated CPR certifications, defibrillation re-certification, police clearance (every two years for attendants), EMR/EFR/EMT/MFR recertification (every three years), and/or RN/RPN registration (annual).

A copy of all immunizations must be provided upon request — a TB test is also required annually.

In some cases, a specialty driver's licence is also a requirement for our attendants.
